Reaching across continents
Our friends at Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, Kinshasa, now have their own larger church building, see the Bulletin Board for more information.
Our branch church has the great joy of supporting the education of Sunday School students attending Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Public schools are not free in the DRC, and with an average of 6 children per household, many parents find it difficult to send all their children to school. We are pleased to have been able to help more than one hundred children with schooling to date.
Our church also supports a free literacy school offering remedial help to those children who cannot afford any education. The school, Les Ecoles Du Coeur, also has a special class for street children who began to attend Fifth Church’s Christian Science Sunday school when the superintendent took a Reading Room cart out onto the streets of Kinshasa and befriended the boys. Along with classes for children, the school offers a sewing class for single mothers and a literacy classes for adult women who have never learned to read.
We invite you to join us in supporting this worthwhile, ongoing project. Your prayers are always appreciated, whether focused on the children and their needs or on the national situation in Congo, which has made life difficult for everyone there.
As of fall 2012, local authorities have been asking Mayal Tshiabuila, a United Nations worker and our contact in Kinshasa, to care for orphaned or abandoned children in increasing numbers. Below are some of these children currently being cared for.
