Les Ecoles du Coeur School
Teachers are paid $50 a month. The average rent in Kinshasa is $40 per month. Teachers badly need a raise and the government has mandated a minimum wage to be paid by next year.
The primary class at Les Ecoles Du Coeurs, which has reached almost 60 students. The need is to split it in two; otherwise, children will have difficulty learning, and the teacher will be overwhelmed. Right now, there are four children per desk.
The level 2 class serves 37 students. The need is for a larger facility, and better salaries for the teachers. The falling dollar has affected the cost of living for those working at the school.
The most pressing need still to be met for regular school students is books for reading. So far, the teacher writes reading texts on the blackboard, and on occasion selected texts are typed and duplicated. Children don’t have books of their own that they can take home to practice reading. Buying reading books would cost $10/student.
